Prince Paul ★★

In a faraway land once lived the clever and brave prince Paul. One day he learned that princess Petra had been kidnapped and that she was held captive in Ammersoyen castle. He did not hesitate one moment, jumped on his horse and drove to the castle. When he arrived at the castle, he saw that there was a wide moat around the castle. He also saw two boards lying in the otherwise empty surroundings around the castle. Unfortunately, he discovered that both boards were just a bit shorter than the width of the moat, and therefore too short to put across the moat.

Puzzle

The question: How could the clever prince Paul still build a bridge across the moat using just the two boards, to rescue princess Petra from the castle?
